Tom works on a variety of high-value, high-profile commercial and civil fraud disputes spanning
multiple jurisdictions.
Tom has a wide-ranging expertise from a broad practice in commercial litigation, with a particular
focus on civil fraud, asset recovery, banking and finance matters, and complex contractual disputes.
He is experienced in conducting substantive trials, acting in appellate work, bringing and defending
applications for urgent interim relief, and enforcing judgments.
Notable Experience
- Acting for the claimants in a long-running, complex civil fraud litigation with a value of
over USD 500 million, with proceedings and court hearings in numerous jurisdictions - including
England and Wales, the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Liechtenstein, Switzerland
and Curacao - and several appeals, including to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
- Acting in a UNCITRAL arbitration as sole counsel for an engineering firm in a contractual
dispute with a utility company owned by the Government of Afghanistan, with a value of over USD
10 million.
- Acting for a Middle Eastern bank in numerous successful applications in a multi-jurisdictional
asset recovery case, including acting in appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court on
whether legislation to prevent frauds on creditors could be circumvented by use of companies,
and in proceedings that established that foreign judgments can be enforced under English common
law even if not enforceable in the foreign jurisdiction.
Background
Tom read law at King's College London, where he obtained a first-class degree, before
going on to the
University of Oxford where he was awarded a distinction in the Bachelor of Civil Law. Prior to joining
the firm, Tom completed pupillage at Fountain Court Chambers and was awarded the Lord Denning, Hardwicke
and Sunley scholarships by Lincoln's Inn. Tom's first career was as an English teacher in a secondary
school in South East London.
