James is an Associate in our civil and commercial litigation team and has experience working on a wide variety of complex international disputes.

James has acted on commercial litigation, civil fraud and arbitration matters, many with multi-jurisdictional elements, for clients ranging from individuals to large international companies

Notable Experience

  • Acting for the seller in post-acquisition breach of warranty and indemnity claims brought by the buyer of a healthcare business, and bringing related professional negligence claims against the seller's former advisors.
  • Acting for the claimant in a claim against a Nasdaq-listed energy company for breach of a service agreement and of oral agreements.
  • Acting for a pharmaceutical company in obtaining a worldwide freezing order, later upheld after a contested set aside hearing, in relation to an international fraud.
  • Advising individuals on submissions as part of the Foskett Panel process, to support compensation claims arising from the fraud perpetrated at the HBOS Impaired Assets unit at Reading and Bishopsgate.
  • Acting for an EU airline in an ICC arbitration, following a dispute with the airline's Chinese customers due to non-payment of fees under air charter agreements.
  • Acting for an investment firm in an LCIA arbitration regarding the sale of care homes.
  • Acting for UK-based claimants (alongside a Spanish law firm) in claims brought in Spain, to recover property deposits lost due to the bankruptcy of Spanish property developers.

Background

James studied a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages (French and Russian) at the University of Oxford and completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and LLM Legal Practice (Solicitors) course at BPP Law School. He trained and qualified at the London office of a US disputes firm before joining PCB Byrne in 2024. He speaks French and Russian.
