Charles is a criminal litigation lawyer with experience in white collar defence and investigations.

He has expertise in representing both organisations and individuals on internal investigations, multi-jurisdictional investigations, and prosecutions by authorities (including the SFO, HMRC, Parquet National Financier, and US Department of Justice). He also has experience representing clients in a variety of general crime cases (including violent crimes, harassment, and sexual offences), as well as a wide range of regulatory issues and disputes.

During training, Charles also spent time seconded to the litigation and investigations team at aircraft manufacturer, Airbus.

Notable Experience

  • Acting for Airbus S.E. in a global investigation into allegations of fraud, bribery and corruption, and the subsequent €3.6bn DPA settlements with the SFO, PNF, US DOJ, and DOS.
  • Representing a former FTSE 100 senior executive in relation to an ongoing UK authority investigation regarding allegations including money laundering, bribery, and conspiracy to defraud.
  • Acting for individuals under investigation across various European jurisdictions in connection with the long-running Cum-Ex investigations.
  • Advising individuals and companies with respect to sanctions implications, including OFSI and OFAC sanctions targeting Russian entities and individuals.
  • Representing and securing the acquittal of a senior Swiss-based trader accused of sexual assault.
  • Representing a number of individuals in connection with assault, violent crimes, harassment and stalking, and sexual offences.

Background

Charles studied law at the University of York, graduating in 2017, before completing the LPC at BPP Law School in London. After training at Dechert LLP, he joined PCB Byrne LLP on qualification in September 2020. Charles is a member of the Young Fraud Lawyers Association.
