On 15 January 2026, Nick Ephgrave announced he would be stepping down from his role as Director of the UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) at the end of March after 38 years of public service. The departure comes just halfway through his 5-year tenure, which was due to conclude in September 2028. Michael Potts and Beth Arrowsmith consider the SFO’s record under Ephgrave, the progress made as against his ambitious targets and the challenges that continue to face the SFO and await Ephgrave’s successor.
