Jonothan is a dual-qualified and highly experienced civil litigator, working across a range of complex, high-value commercial disputes and fraud matters.

Jonothan is a rising star in the fields of civil fraud, asset recovery and cross-border disputes. Since joining the firm in 2018, Jonothan has played a key role on multiple high-profile, high-value disputes in the English Courts and developed expertise in cryptocurrency disputes. Prior to joining PCB Byrne, Jonothan was both a civil litigator and criminal prosecutor for the Office of the Crown Solicitor in Auckland, New Zealand.

His practice included insolvency, asset-tracing and judgment enforcement matters. A skilled collaborator, he has worked closely with law enforcement and other government agencies, multinational professional services firms and insolvency practitioners. Jonothan is also experienced in regulatory prosecutions and routinely conducted jury trials and civil and criminal hearings in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal in New Zealand.

For Walid Giahmi successfully defending multi-party claims of bribery and corruption relating to USD $200 million investment, brought by the Libyan Investment Authority.
For a defendant contesting £300 million multi-party shareholder fraud claims.
For a claimant, with successful recovery, in £4.5 million cross-border cyber-fraud.
For Tatiana Akhmedova enforcing £453 million divorce judgment.
For a claimant enforcing historic €2 million judgment, including obtaining post-judgment disclosure.
For a claimant in a multi-million-pound cross-border shareholder dispute.

Background

Jonothan was admitted to the bar in New Zealand in 2013 and is enrolled as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. Jonothan holds an MBA from Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, where he specialised in crypto-assets. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws from Victoria University, and a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland.
